Playwright: quiara alegria hudes
Quiara Alegria Hudes grew up in West Philadelphia. Born to parents of Puerto Rican and Jewish descent, Hudes took a great interest in music composition and writing as a child. She graduated from Yale with a BA in Music Composition before turning her attention to writing plays. After finishing an MFA in playwriting from Brown University, Hudes gained fame as the book writer to the Tony-Award-winning hit musical In the Heights in 2008. Her most recent work includes a trilogy of plays known as the Elliot Cycle: Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, Water by the Spoonful, and The Happiest Song Plays Last. She is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, including the 2012 Pullitzer Prize for Drama for Water by the Spoonful and a Pullitzer finalist for Elliot, a Soldier’s Fugue. Quiara Alegria Hudes also written for children; specifically, the musical Barrio Grrrrrl! and book In My Neighborhood. She currently resides in New York City with her husband and children.
